South Shetland Islands

From the first day in Yankee Harbor we fall under the spell of the penguins and we will not get tired of observing them.

The gentoo penguin the one we will come across the most

It's the season of the little ones

The chinstrap penguin gets its name from the thin band on its neck that gives it the appearance of wearing a helmet.

Greenwhich Island. A first attempt at mooring aborted because we are touching bottom. We will have to be more careful in the future

The rocky islands are mostly covered in glaciers as far as the eye can see

Tara, the exploration schooner at Half Moon Bay

Snow and ice are the masters of these places

We feel tiny before this nature

Whale bones scattered on the beaches are reminders of the dark past of these islands

The Spanish scientific base of Juan Carlos I. A lunar place

The ash on this glacier is from a recent eruption on Deception Island

Scientists come to study the mosses that proliferate in this hostile place

The skuas, predators of these places

The Adelie penguin, we will meet him very little during our trip

At Livingstone Island, Caval'ou anchors in front of the Spanish base Juan Carlos I. Unable to invite us to dinner (due to Covid), the team offers us a tortilla and beers. What a welcome !

The discreet pass of Deception Island

We then spend 3 days on Deception Island and this stopover did not disappoint us!

We remain amazed by the volcanic landscape of this island: fumaroles, black sand beaches and ashes.
